We— the ‘Elders’ who developed the CALL to action in this website— come from diverse continents, cultures and political backgrounds. Many of us accumulated experience in relatively long lives, while a few are only 'Elders of the future'. Independently of age, we all share a sense of social and moral responsibility and a commitment to act against the militarism and wars increasingly engulfing our societies. This is why we developed the CALL in this website. We refuse to be acquiescent spectators. We stand up, say 'not in our name!' and hope to motivate others to share our concerns.
We started meeting online and learning from one another in June 2024 and, since then, we met once a month. You may access here the recordings of our 'conversations among colleagues and friends' dedicated to diverse subjects related to or affected by militarism. In our meetings we came to envisage an ‘organic network’ of committed Elders and allies, willing to join efforts for a variety of local, national and global initiatives coherent with our call to action. As part of the network, we build upon our personal connections, embrace a plurality of strategies and activities, and seek joint learning and stronger collective impact. We envisage that the people convinced of the need to sign and share the call will develop their own ‘nodes’ at various levels in the network, which may be geographically-based or topic-based and will remain self-organized and autonomous. The nodes could loosely coordinate initiatives in a horizontal way and are expected to appreciate partnerships with other efforts and organizations dedicated to peace and sustainability, such as World BEYOND War to which we are affiliated. Please find the here the World Beyond War pledge. In 2025 we have also decided to join the STOP RE-ARM Europe campaign.
We are, and will remain, modest, lean and minimally structured. This website, for instance, is purposefully extremely simple. It was created only to share our call and offer a page of entry for information and tools from diverse sources. Individuals and organizations who share the spirit and meaning of the call are invited to share it as broadly and translate it in their preferred languages (translations into Spanish, French and Italian are under consideration). They are also warmly invited to participate in enriching and attuning our collective aims and vision. For that, please get in touch with the originators of this call by contacting: elders4peace(at)gmail.com
We thank most warmly Martin Brechtl, who allows the free use of his wonderful aurora borealis image for the home page and Matteo C. for his invaluable advice during our setting up of this 'home-made' web site.
